Feedback provided to tutee: word choice; correct responses

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: We went through the list of commonly used expressions and discussed the "correct" response to each statement. We discussed the cultural aspect of using "sorry" and "excuse me" even though there is no need for apology. We also talked about how when asking someone a favor, people often you Yes/No structured questions even though they are not looking for a yes/no answer. Ex: "Do you know what time it is?" I learned that there aren't as many cultural differences as I thought there would be. Instead it was heavy on new vocabulary and sentence structures.

  Date/Time: Monday 1/25 Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Reading & Poetry part II Feedback provided to tutee: Pronunciation corrections, new vocabulary, and explanations for poems when misunderstood Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:  Some of the poems I picked ended up being inappropriate because they used Old English or were at a lower reading level than my tutee's so I am learning more about finding level-appropriate materials. It seems EFL/ESL students tend to be very good at listening and reading but struggle with writing and speaking so I will try to find more activities that focus on developing those skills.

 Date/Time: Wednesday 1/20 1:00-1:50 Topic/Skill: Speaking Teacher presentation: Asking questions out of an activity book Classroom management: A lot of error correction on pronunciation and repetition of questions Materials: pdf textbook provided by instructor Student Participation: Took turns answering questions about themselves Feedback provided: corrected pronunciation and vocabulary mistakes Lessons on teaching you learned: I learned that sometimes you have to get creative when asking questions of students. This can include hand motions, repetition, rephrasing, and other means to make your questions clear and understandable. I also loved that this instructor was having fun while teaching!
