Topic/Skill: Listening

Teacher Presentation: Kevin cooks stuff in the kitchen with Ms Kim

Classroom Management: Students learned about summarizing and then listened to the audio from Ms. Kim. Afterwards they practiced summarizing and discusses the audio.

Materials: YouTube

Student Participation: Students discussed vocabulary with the class and also discussed the audio/video.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: 

I learned how the importance of explaining vocabulary and origins of words. For example, in Ms.Kim's class we went over vocab like Quesadilla and Creme Brûlée, and in order to make sure that the students were pronouncing the work right, Ms.Kim emphasized the words are not English words and so they don't follow the English pronunciation rules. There are a lot of words in English that we use often but are borrowed from other languages, so it's important to tell students when a word is foreign and pronounced differently.

  Date/Time: Monday 1/25 Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Reading & Poetry part II Feedback provided to tutee: Pronunciation corrections, new vocabulary, and explanations for poems when misunderstood Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:  Some of the poems I picked ended up being inappropriate because they used Old English or were at a lower reading level than my tutee's so I am learning more about finding level-appropriate materials. It seems EFL/ESL students tend to be very good at listening and reading but struggle with writing and speaking so I will try to find more activities that focus on developing those skills.

 Date/Time: Wednesday 1/20 1:00-1:50 Topic/Skill: Speaking Teacher presentation: Asking questions out of an activity book Classroom management: A lot of error correction on pronunciation and repetition of questions Materials: pdf textbook provided by instructor Student Participation: Took turns answering questions about themselves Feedback provided: corrected pronunciation and vocabulary mistakes Lessons on teaching you learned: I learned that sometimes you have to get creative when asking questions of students. This can include hand motions, repetition, rephrasing, and other means to make your questions clear and understandable. I also loved that this instructor was having fun while teaching!
