Topics discussed: 

We discussed his current involvement in volunteer programs and the scuba club. He will be volunteering to teach students in Tallahassee about STEM. He is very excited to meet the other volunteers and interact with others face-to-face. We also talked about our travel history and future plans. He said he wants to visit as much of America as he can. We are considering mapping out some potential states and cities of interest. 


Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: 

Hossam and I spoke of the nature available in America and Saudi Arabia. We share screened with each other to show different mountain ranges and interesting places. We also talked about how we felt about America and he said he loves America because it is a place with many cultures and different environments. We also talked about the systems of measurement.

So I learned to go back and forth between teaching them different things. This was difficult, but also helpful in that Maher, who is at a higher level, was able to explain things to Meeshal, since both of them speak Arabic.

  Date/Time: Monday 1/25 Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Reading & Poetry part II Feedback provided to tutee: Pronunciation corrections, new vocabulary, and explanations for poems when misunderstood Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:  Some of the poems I picked ended up being inappropriate because they used Old English or were at a lower reading level than my tutee's so I am learning more about finding level-appropriate materials. It seems EFL/ESL students tend to be very good at listening and reading but struggle with writing and speaking so I will try to find more activities that focus on developing those skills.

 Date/Time: Wednesday 1/20 1:00-1:50 Topic/Skill: Speaking Teacher presentation: Asking questions out of an activity book Classroom management: A lot of error correction on pronunciation and repetition of questions Materials: pdf textbook provided by instructor Student Participation: Took turns answering questions about themselves Feedback provided: corrected pronunciation and vocabulary mistakes Lessons on teaching you learned: I learned that sometimes you have to get creative when asking questions of students. This can include hand motions, repetition, rephrasing, and other means to make your questions clear and understandable. I also loved that this instructor was having fun while teaching!
