Topic: Practicing for the TOEFL speaking questions

Thing learned: I had tutoring with Maher again today and we practiced speaking for the toefl exam. I learned that at Maher's level he really needs repeated practice and exposure listening to native speakers and talking at a fast pace. I taught Maher's class afterwards, and Maher seemed a bit unengaged, so I'm not sure if the content in the class was above or below his level, but I think that in our next tutoring session I will try to bring up topics that we talked about in class to see if he was engaged or not.

So I learned to go back and forth between teaching them different things. This was difficult, but also helpful in that Maher, who is at a higher level, was able to explain things to Meeshal, since both of them speak Arabic.

  Date/Time: Monday 1/25 Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Reading & Poetry part II Feedback provided to tutee: Pronunciation corrections, new vocabulary, and explanations for poems when misunderstood Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:  Some of the poems I picked ended up being inappropriate because they used Old English or were at a lower reading level than my tutee's so I am learning more about finding level-appropriate materials. It seems EFL/ESL students tend to be very good at listening and reading but struggle with writing and speaking so I will try to find more activities that focus on developing those skills.

 Date/Time: Wednesday 1/20 1:00-1:50 Topic/Skill: Speaking Teacher presentation: Asking questions out of an activity book Classroom management: A lot of error correction on pronunciation and repetition of questions Materials: pdf textbook provided by instructor Student Participation: Took turns answering questions about themselves Feedback provided: corrected pronunciation and vocabulary mistakes Lessons on teaching you learned: I learned that sometimes you have to get creative when asking questions of students. This can include hand motions, repetition, rephrasing, and other means to make your questions clear and understandable. I also loved that this instructor was having fun while teaching!
