L'Jai TS#5
I had my second session with Arwa on Saturday, February 6th. Last time, when Arwa had trouble reading words, she only tried for a little to sounds them out and then gave up, so I read the words she couldn't pronounce and had her repeat after me, but I noticed that if the word came up again, she'd still have trouble reading it. At the beginning of this session, Arwa and I went over syllables. I explained what syllables were and we counted the syllables in a list of words. After a few tries, she seemed to understand this. After that we moved into reading passages, and I encouraged Arwa to try sounding out the words by syllable instead of asking for help when she couldn't read them. She was able to get through a lot of words she couldn't read by sounding them out, and I think it helps that the words are already in her vocabulary. I noticed the words she struggled the most with were words where a consonant cant have more than 1 sound, like page or decide. When trying to sound these words out she got stuck on the hard consonant sound instead of the soft one. At the time, I didn't know the rule for when/why we make that sound, so I looked it up when I got home and I think we'll work on that next session.
