L’Jai TS #3
I had my first tutoring session with Arwa last Thursday, February 4th. Arwa is 9 years old, she was refereed to me by Mae’s conversation partner. I think Arwa is very smart. When speaking to her, her English is good and she seems very well adjusted. Her mother said she needs the most practice in reading and writing, which I could see because she struggles to read at her grade level. I think her biggest problem is in the phonetics. She knows and understands the word when it is said aloud to her, but when reading it off a page she struggles to pronounce words properly. For our first session, we read through short stories and passages. I explained a few rules of phonics after each one. For example, after the first passage, we went over the pronunciation of words with one vowel and two vowels. I explained to her that words with two vowels are typically pronounced with the first vowel getting the long sound and the last vowel stays silent (e.g “take” or “lame”). After that, when moving on to the second passage, I could see a slight improvement in her reading.
