L'Jai CP#1

 I had my first meeting with my conversation partner Julia today. It went really well. We started off talking about ourselves with the worksheet Joshua sent us. Julia told me about her family and her life. We walked about what Brazil was like, the culture and the food and the differences between her experiences in Brazil and America. After that we talked about the TV shows that we've watched/are watching on Netflix. Julia said she likes to watch American TV shows to get better at speaking English. We both really like the Queen's Gambit. Julia said she's been watching Shameless sometimes to get better at speaking colloquially. I told Julia that she should start watching Bridgerton and she told me that she's really been like Lupin, so I think I might watch that. Finally, we read the story Joshua sent to us and talked about how it's kind of like how we perceive our own cultures and other cultures.

  Date/Time: Monday 1/25 Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Reading & Poetry part II Feedback provided to tutee: Pronunciation corrections, new vocabulary, and explanations for poems when misunderstood Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:  Some of the poems I picked ended up being inappropriate because they used Old English or were at a lower reading level than my tutee's so I am learning more about finding level-appropriate materials. It seems EFL/ESL students tend to be very good at listening and reading but struggle with writing and speaking so I will try to find more activities that focus on developing those skills.

 Date/Time: Wednesday 1/20 1:00-1:50 Topic/Skill: Speaking Teacher presentation: Asking questions out of an activity book Classroom management: A lot of error correction on pronunciation and repetition of questions Materials: pdf textbook provided by instructor Student Participation: Took turns answering questions about themselves Feedback provided: corrected pronunciation and vocabulary mistakes Lessons on teaching you learned: I learned that sometimes you have to get creative when asking questions of students. This can include hand motions, repetition, rephrasing, and other means to make your questions clear and understandable. I also loved that this instructor was having fun while teaching!
