Dojun Kim

Topic/skills: critical thinking, hypothetical thinking in context with the Nasa Perseverance Mars landing. 

feedback: Overall, wonderful conversation. We had a conversation about the possibilities of biological life on Mars and what that would mean for aerospace exploration. Dojun did not have such a hard time giving me his opinions about extraterrestrial beings existing outside of our planet. 

Lessons learned: I learned about the various opinions South Koreans have when it comes to space exploration. Dojun was able t form a concise argument in proper English to convey that he must be shown proof of outside existence before believing (which is amazingly fair). Today marks our last zoom tutoring session. I am really happy with Dojun's progress, he has become less shy about making mistakes while speaking and writing. I would also state that he has improved his vocab intake. I am tremendously thankful to have been given the opportunity to complete tutoring sessions with Dojun. It was a wonderful experience! I learned how to become more patient with students learning English. I also learned how to have conversations about cultures, and more! Really good session today. woo woo!

  Date/Time: Monday 1/25 Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Reading & Poetry part II Feedback provided to tutee: Pronunciation corrections, new vocabulary, and explanations for poems when misunderstood Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:  Some of the poems I picked ended up being inappropriate because they used Old English or were at a lower reading level than my tutee's so I am learning more about finding level-appropriate materials. It seems EFL/ESL students tend to be very good at listening and reading but struggle with writing and speaking so I will try to find more activities that focus on developing those skills.

 Date/Time: Wednesday 1/20 1:00-1:50 Topic/Skill: Speaking Teacher presentation: Asking questions out of an activity book Classroom management: A lot of error correction on pronunciation and repetition of questions Materials: pdf textbook provided by instructor Student Participation: Took turns answering questions about themselves Feedback provided: corrected pronunciation and vocabulary mistakes Lessons on teaching you learned: I learned that sometimes you have to get creative when asking questions of students. This can include hand motions, repetition, rephrasing, and other means to make your questions clear and understandable. I also loved that this instructor was having fun while teaching!
