Topic/Skills: Essay writing (wrap up activity) + exercise on active listening. 

Feedback: Mariama did a fantastic job in her essay writing! It was so well done. There were a few minor syntax and grammar errors (awkward wording, spelling, period usage and preposition usage), but overall, a fantastic job! For the active listening activity, she seemed to have a firm understanding on the subject. A really good session today!

lessons learned: We talked about how active listening is a sign of respect in American culture. That is quite important for CIES students to understand how to properly communicate in every-day life.

  Date/Time: Monday 1/25 Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Reading & Poetry part II Feedback provided to tutee: Pronunciation corrections, new vocabulary, and explanations for poems when misunderstood Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:  Some of the poems I picked ended up being inappropriate because they used Old English or were at a lower reading level than my tutee's so I am learning more about finding level-appropriate materials. It seems EFL/ESL students tend to be very good at listening and reading but struggle with writing and speaking so I will try to find more activities that focus on developing those skills.

 Date/Time: Wednesday 1/20 1:00-1:50 Topic/Skill: Speaking Teacher presentation: Asking questions out of an activity book Classroom management: A lot of error correction on pronunciation and repetition of questions Materials: pdf textbook provided by instructor Student Participation: Took turns answering questions about themselves Feedback provided: corrected pronunciation and vocabulary mistakes Lessons on teaching you learned: I learned that sometimes you have to get creative when asking questions of students. This can include hand motions, repetition, rephrasing, and other means to make your questions clear and understandable. I also loved that this instructor was having fun while teaching!
