Aaliyah TS #14

Date/Time: Friday 2/19

Location: Zoom

Topic/Skill: Critical Incidents & "Life in the Dark" (critical thinking and listening)

Feedback provided to tutee: New vocabulary, how to understand new vocabulary based on context clues and prefixes/suffixes, and how to work through the critical incident method to better prepare for future situations

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: While preparing for this tutoring session, I learned a lot about the critical incident method and how it is used by ESL teachers. There are many helpful examples and resources online. My tutee described her experience asking for a refund in English where she said typing with customer service online rather than having a phone call so that she had time to properly translate things she did not understand was helpful for her and, in the future, she would carefully read the policy and warranty of the company instead of assuming it would be the same as in Korea. Hearing her experience reminded me of my own experiences in Japan and I feel this is a method I could use in my own life as a foreign language learner as well as to help my students as an EFL teacher.
