Topics discussed: 

Hossam and I discussed his past education and long-term goals. He shared that once he completes CIES and his partner graduates from her bachelor's degree, he plans to get married and move together to America to study for a Master's degree. We also talked about his experience learning English with CIES. He shared that Dr. Rios is his favorite professor because he is personable and intentional.


Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: 

Hossam and I spoke of different culture's foods and where to find them in Tallahassee. He also shared that he traveled to Panama Beach and enjoyed the city. He wants to visit Miami soon so I spoke to him about the culture in Miami, as well as good restaurants and locations to visit.

  Date/Time: Monday 1/25 Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Reading & Poetry part II Feedback provided to tutee: Pronunciation corrections, new vocabulary, and explanations for poems when misunderstood Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:  Some of the poems I picked ended up being inappropriate because they used Old English or were at a lower reading level than my tutee's so I am learning more about finding level-appropriate materials. It seems EFL/ESL students tend to be very good at listening and reading but struggle with writing and speaking so I will try to find more activities that focus on developing those skills.

 Date/Time: Wednesday 1/20 1:00-1:50 Topic/Skill: Speaking Teacher presentation: Asking questions out of an activity book Classroom management: A lot of error correction on pronunciation and repetition of questions Materials: pdf textbook provided by instructor Student Participation: Took turns answering questions about themselves Feedback provided: corrected pronunciation and vocabulary mistakes Lessons on teaching you learned: I learned that sometimes you have to get creative when asking questions of students. This can include hand motions, repetition, rephrasing, and other means to make your questions clear and understandable. I also loved that this instructor was having fun while teaching!
