Topic/Skill: Introductions and PDF Tutoring Guidelines

Feedback provided to tutee: Tried to communicate as much as possible. There is a large language barrier so I asked the questions as well as I could and used Arabic-speaking friends whenever we struggled to understand each other

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Meshaal is at the beginner level. He is from Saudi Arabia and speaks Arabic. We will be focusing on his vocabulary and speaking skills since he wants to better his communication.

So I learned to go back and forth between teaching them different things. This was difficult, but also helpful in that Maher, who is at a higher level, was able to explain things to Meeshal, since both of them speak Arabic.

  Date/Time: Monday 1/25 Location: Zoom Topic/Skill: Reading & Poetry part II Feedback provided to tutee: Pronunciation corrections, new vocabulary, and explanations for poems when misunderstood Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:  Some of the poems I picked ended up being inappropriate because they used Old English or were at a lower reading level than my tutee's so I am learning more about finding level-appropriate materials. It seems EFL/ESL students tend to be very good at listening and reading but struggle with writing and speaking so I will try to find more activities that focus on developing those skills.

 Date/Time: Wednesday 1/20 1:00-1:50 Topic/Skill: Speaking Teacher presentation: Asking questions out of an activity book Classroom management: A lot of error correction on pronunciation and repetition of questions Materials: pdf textbook provided by instructor Student Participation: Took turns answering questions about themselves Feedback provided: corrected pronunciation and vocabulary mistakes Lessons on teaching you learned: I learned that sometimes you have to get creative when asking questions of students. This can include hand motions, repetition, rephrasing, and other means to make your questions clear and understandable. I also loved that this instructor was having fun while teaching!
